Review of Michael Davis, "The Music of Reason"
I’ve just posted the proofs for my review of Michael Davis’s most recent book, The Music of Reason. The work consists of an interpretation of Rousseau’s Essay on the Origin of Languages, Nietzsche’s The Birth of Tragedy, and Plato’s Lesser Hippias, in that order. It is a challenging and rewarding book, worth reading even if you’re not especially invested in these particular texts.
As for my review, you can read it here.
But, if you don’t have time to read the book or even my review, at least enjoy this quote from Davis’s discussion of the Lesser Hippias; it struck me as a wonderful summation of his Socratic approach:
An enlightenment is ever accompanied by a darkening; what is brought into the light must cast a shadow. This would be tragic were it not possible to shed some light on the character and necessity of the shadow cast.
